ORIENTATION

In 1996 the CAPB released an orientation tool for members of police boards/commissions in the form of a CD-ROM called "Welcome to the Job". The CD-ROM is an interactive program broken into several sections covering topics such as: the role of a board; the tools of board governance; board relationships and partners; legal responsibilities; and budget issues. It also contains a glossary of commonly used terms and a database of provincial Police Acts.

The CD-ROM represents the conclusion of Phase II of the Pursuit of Excellence project, jointly funded by Solicitor General Canada and seven provinces across Canada. Phase I of Pursuit of Excellence resulted in the publication in November 1994 of a governance document called "Putting the Tools in Place". The Phase I report addresses the importance of "finding the right people" in appointing individuals to police boards/commissions, and of those people receiving adequate training to effectively fulfill their role.

A copy of the CD-ROM is provided free of charge to member boards and is available in html format in the members' area. Otherwise, it can be purchased for $50.00.

For more information or to order the CD-ROM, please contact: jlanzon@capb.ca.
